Before Artemis there was Clarisse
We discovered this lovely bubble-gum-hued mannequin at a Going Out of Business Sale. I brought her home and couldn't stop thinking of what else she could be. Sure, you can dress her in just about any imaginable way, but what else could she be MADE of? How else can you represent the gorgeousness of the female shape yet leave her open to the endless possibilities of WHO or WHAT she could be?
And so it starts. With wire and tape, and fabrics and hot glue... and cardboard appendages with aluminum foil skins. We fight over who's turn it is to dress her or wrap her in new shapes made of burlap and paper. Sofie has taken charge of costume changes and named our pink friend Clarisse. I've been missing the high touch of creating things with my hands and growing things in the earth. So as I start toying with the ideas of a living sculpture, the name for the first incarnation, the goddess of the wilderness, is clear - it's Artemis.
